Neuralink is Elon Musk's AI brain-chip company that is developing neural-interface-technology. Specifically, they are creating a "device that would be embedded in a person's brain, where it would record brain activity and potentially stimulate it," according to an article from Insider. The intention is that this technology can help better understand and treat neurological disorders. This includes the study and treatment of such conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
It all sounds futuristic, at least in my opinion. However, as artificial intelligence technology continues to advance, we are only getting that much closer to making something like this a reality. According to Insider, the company is developing two pieces of equipment: a robot that implants the chip, and a chip that is implanted in a person's skull. The chip is "connected to 1,024 tiny electrodes, no thicker than a human hair" according to an article from BBC (1). This would be used to monitor brain activity by transmitting signals to a computer and, "theoretically, electrically stimulate the brain" (2).
The company is developing a technology where humans and AI work together. I would recommend checking out Neuralink's website which provides an interesting introduction to the device. In the long term, Elon Musk believes that "Neuralink's chip could be used to meld human consciousness with artificial intelligence," according to Insider (2). Further statements from Musk relates to the capabilities he believes Neuralink can offer, such as "save and replay memories" or "telepathically summon their car" (2). These capabilities seems very optimistic and futuristic to me, and I am not sure we will ever see something like this in our lifetime. However, these statements demonstrate the impact that the company hopes to one day make with its technology.
I would also recommending watching this Monkey MindPong video which shows the usage of Neuralink. The video claims that the monkey is playing a video game Pong with its mind. While controversial, it is still a very interesting concept as it relates to AI and where the technology is heading.
